Where I went.

Somewhere into my own world. That’s where I went during my publishing break. I continued to make pictures, and make pictures and make pictures. I produced a large quantity of good work.

That’s what you’ll be seeing in the next couple of weeks. Then, I’ll move on. I have all sorts of projects going on right now. But, there is one that I’m working on for Storyteller. I had to separate that one from the rest as if Storyteller where a client. I realized that I would never complete it if I didn’t do that.

It’s called “Jefferson.”

There is a Jefferson Parish on the east and west banks of The Mississippi River. That’s not it. There is a Jefferson Highway that starts in New Orleans and works its way upriver all the way to the Bonnet Carre Spillway. That’s it.

Every time that I travel on a piece of the road I get interested in it. Much of it is light industrial or commercial properties.

There is a place where it makes a hard “S” turn. That’s where streetcars used to run. There is a cafe called “Crabby Jacks” located about there where you can eat great friend chicken.

There are abandoned places and upscale places, if hospitals are upscale.

It ends at the spillway, right on the river. When the spillway is closed you can drive in it. When it’s open, flood waters from the north bring it to almost overflowing. You can see larger freighters pass by on the river that look like they are taller than the roadway.

That’s my project.

Jefferson Highway from beginning to end. I thought of it while we were going to Best Buy, which we’ve done a million times, or less. It just sort of clicked in.

But, first I have to start photographing it… with real cameras. And, I want to show you how I spent my winter break.

The picture. This is a fine example of my winter break experimentation. It’s actually three layered pictures.

The winter tree came first. I added the blue sky as a background and finished it with magenta flowers that don’t look like flowers.

All of that took some doing, but all of it was done in Snapseed. There is no further post production.

I’ve also started taking off copyright information because it bothers potential users. Storyteller is copyrighted so why double the notice?

Morning art.

The business week begins. The most important week. We vote for the president. Many frame it as a vote for Democracy. Many see it as a choice between good and evil. No matter how you see it this election is as an important an election as I’ve ever seen in my lifetime.

We also vote for down ballet candidates. This, too, is very important because that can change the complexion of the country.

I have never done what I’m about to say, because I’ve always voted person, not party. Not this time. Straight ticket. All blue.

The current president keeps saying that he wants to make America great. He seems to forget that he is the president. That he can make America great. He hasn’t. He won’t. He can’t.

He made America worse. Way worst.

At best, he’s incompetent. At worst, he is the most evil creature ever to walk on this planet.

I have a couple of friends who will jump right in here and tell me that I’m drinking the kool aid. Since this is a family storyteller, I’m gonna say screw ’em. If I said to their face, I’d use another word.

There. That’s where I stand.

I’m too old to put up with this nonsense. It’s time to start rebuilding my country and rebuild trust throughout the world.

It’s time to get back to the good work of rebuilding and repairing.

And, you thought after looking at the picture that this was going to be a nice little candy cotton wrapped post.

Picture, picture on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all? Might as well be you, because I’m sure it isn’t me.

But, first a little housekeeping.

We got power back about 10am yesterday. That was something worthy of hoots and hollers.

But, no internet. I talked to Linksys. I talked to Arris, the folks who make my router and modem. We did everything we could. At one point, they asked if we could have a three way conversation. We did.

No joy.

They believed that I wasn’t receiving signal from my internet service provider. So, I called them. Cox. They were their usual helpful selves. They wanted to run through their checklist to find the issue.

I said, “Whoa, slow down little buddy.” I’ve already done two versions of that.” He asked what then, did I want him to do.

I asked him if there was a work group or news bulletin board that he could talk to. I wanted him to see what kind of damage their towers and system received in New Orleans during Hurricane Zeta.

A few minutes later… joy. Sorta. They were down and rapidly rebuilding and restoring. I asked him when we might expect a return of signal. He replied sometime tomorrow (Sunday).

Fair enough.

I checked my phone at about 9am, and, sure enough. Internet signal.

I wrote in an email to a friend of mine that 25 years ago having the internet wouldn’t have seemed vital. I used it, but it was accessed through telephone lines. It was slow and there wasn’t much that interested me. And, I got tired of receiving CDs from AOL.

Today?

Well, that’s another story.

Why is it important to this picture?

The picture lives on my phone. In order to get it here I need the webinet (If G.W. Bush can say the interwebs and it becomes a thing, I can make up webinet.

It needed work on the big machine. Can’t do that without the webinet.

The picture is art, much in the same vein as that speeding truck. It takes some time and a lot of adjustments, but I got it to what I wanted. It might not be what you want, but enjoy it anyway.


Into the mystic.

Questions. Questions. Questions.

I made this picture. It’s another image created almost from whole cloth. I made a kind of Mardi Gras picture as well. I thought that might be more appropriate since Mardi Gras parade season starts tonight. Then, I thought, I like this picture. I’ll probably drown you in Mardi Gras pictures for the next couple of weeks.

So.

Moody, scary and maybe evil is what you get. Today.

Assuming that I actually make some good pictures tonight, in the rain, at the adult parade called Krewe du Vieux, you’ll see Mardi Gras pictures tomorrow. Yes. In the rain. For all I know, this could be one of those Mardi Gras. Wet. Cold. Kind of miserable.

Why bother?

For the stories you can tell. It’s like a badge of honor. It’s like this. I can say later that I worked in wet conditions, I got soaked, my cameras got wet but I didn’t drown and they didn’t explode. And, all that wet pavement should add a lot of sparkle and color to the images.

This picture. I don’t usually title my work. But… this could be called something like, “When Buildings Fly.” I’ll leave you to work that out. It’s like a scene from a bad tornado chasing movie.

Anyway.

I made the base picture because sunlight was reflecting off of the “flying” building. I did all the rest in post production. This work is a lot of fun to do. I just wish that I knew how to market it. I’ve produced four series over the past nine months or so. Those layered scenes. What the dog saw. And, my version of nature. As well as this new collection which is just beginning.

Everybody seems to like them. All of them. That’s how I ended up with a new gallery showing in the next month. Everybody, and all, are very big words. When a travel writer says this is the “best” restaurant, store, shop or whatever in a city, my response is “so you’ve been to every one of them?”

In this case, it really is everybody and all. Whenever I show this work people take their time looking at it and “oh and ah. ” They don’t just electronically thumb through each picture. They study them as if to ask, “just what the hell kind of photography is that?”

I hate to be crass, but I’d sort of like to make some money from these collections. That’s how anybody moving from commercial work to art keeps going.  No. We aren’t broke or anything like that. I still do corporate and advertising work along with working the other side of me. But, I’d like this new work to pay for itself. Unless I find a gallery who takes the lion’s share of the sales profits, I pay for everything. Printing, matting, glazing and framing. That ain’t cheap. Since most work doesn’t sell right off the wall, it’s usually a sunk cost.

I am excited about new work. And, my final decision about photographing Mardi Gras. I’m doing it. After all, if I don’t do it this year, I’ll be another year older when I start again.
