Another One

Circles.

Circles.

This is a big one.

The Keep N It Real Second Line. It starts at Bayou St. John in Mid City, passes through Treme, into the 7th Ward and eventually comes to a stop near where it started. All sorts of people come out for it. Benevolent societies, a couple of brass bands, Mardi Gras Indians, Baby Dolls and the folks along the parade route who pretty much get involved even if it’s for a short time.

And, the weather. After a week of pretty heavy storms, the weather turned with the resetting of our clocks. From heavy, ugly clouds and a lot of rain, the weather changed over night. Bright, sunny, blue skies and slightly warm weather. I’m pretty sure we all had a lot of fun.

The pictures. They are a representation of what I saw. And heard. And, smelled. I think that before you see or hear a second line, you smell it. People are cooking, barbecuing and roasting stuff. Some is for sale. You have to be careful with that. No. Not for any health reason. But, if you eat and try to walk fast, well you know.

The only picture that I really want to talk about is the one I called “stuck.” Think about being stuck on a float with all this other good stuff happening around you. You’d probably feel stuck too.

  1. Ray, these are really beautifully done. Circles drives home the stunning colors. The trombone player gives me the feeling of the drama and sound the event brings. I wish there was someway to include the smells. Just have to be there. Thanks so much for sharing these images.

    • Thank you. I wish that I could claim all the credit for it, but when you are working this way luck has a lot to do with the picture. For instance, I can frame a picture about how I’d like it to look… and somebody walks in front of the camera, or the Indian turns his head, or, or, or…. 🙂
